NHM Day 5 / NHM Jour 5
The goniopholididae are crocodyliformes known from Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. Their relationships with other crocodyliformes are not clear. They are found to be neosuchians related to Eusuchians and several species closely related, or to longirostrine forme (Pholidosaurids, Dyrosaurids, Thalattosuchians).
Anteophtalmosuchus hooleyi from the Barremian-Aptian of the Isle of Wight, was first described as Goniopholis crassidens. A recent revision suggests it belongs to new genus and species. Observation of the type material allowed to detect several mistakes in the description provided by Steven Salisbury and Darren Naish. The described humerus is not a humerus but a coracoid, the palatine maxilla suture differs from the figure, …
Nannosuchus gracilidens is a small goniopholidid from the English Berriasian. Salisbury (2002) considered this species as valid, but suggests it could be transfered in Goniopholis.
G. simus is from the Berriasian from England. It is possible that Goniopholis simus was a synonym of G. crassidens. The holotype is a nearly complete skull.
